Edward Tufte on the iPhone

E.T posted recently some thought-provoking insights about the iPhone, illustrated by a video. One of the greatest insights is that the Iphone has actually eliminated the « computer administrative debris » such as scroll-bar, zoom tool, etc. to empower the user’s hand. Doing so the iPhone designer have taken advantage of the tactile technology and maximized the signal-to-noise ratio.

« The iPhone platform elegantly solves the design problem of small screens by greatly
intensifying the information resolution of each displayed page. [...] To do so requires increasing the information resolution of the screen by the hardware
(higher resolution screens) and by screen design (eliminating screen-hogging
computer administrative debris, and distributing information adjacent in space). »
